Since she started DJ'ing in her early teens, Alice Moxom, AKA Moxie, has been making a name for herself on the London scene, with any one set throwing up the best in house, disco, Detroit techno, dubstep and grime.

Last year, not only did Moxie graduate from her Surface Design degree at London College of Communication, she was also invited to play at the legendary Dubstep night DMZ alongside Mala and Loefah and Coki. Moxie has DJ'd in LA, NY and across Europe, as well as at Glastonbury and Outlook Festival, while also taking to the radio airwaves on Rinse FM, Kiss and Resonance. When she's not behind the decks, you can find Moxie running the Deviation club night or designing in her studio. i-D tracked the lady down to find out who she's into, how she got into DJ'ing and what she has for i-D's exclusive Moxie Mix, listen here.

What have you been up to recently? I've just been working on a few mixes and on my art. Music and art have always been the two things that have made me happy in life. Once my website is up and running it will give people a clearer idea about my styles. I also run a night called Deviation along with BBC Radio 1 DJ Benji B and have been working on some great events for this year, unfortunately I can't give too much away so you'll have to wait and see!

How did you get into music and when did you start DJ'ing? I've always been into music, from a really young age, my parents would always have music playing around the house, a lot of Blues, Aretha Franklin and Bob Dylan. When I was at school I starting going to an after school DJ workshop and that was my introduction. At first I didn't take it too seriously but it made me want to get out there and go record shopping. Since then I've been collecting vinyl and have spent a lot of tine in my room practising! Luckily it's all paid off.

What has been your favourite place to DJ? I'd have to say Plastic People is my favourite club to play at and to go to, I love getting lost in the darkness, it's as though I'm back in my bedroom DJ'ing on my own. And then for clubnights it would have to be Deviation as I know exactly what the crowd likes, and then of course playing at the legendary dubstep night DMZ was great as the guys just let me get on and do my own thing.

Who are your favourite producers at the moment? Nicolas Jaar - he's a 21-year old producer and DJ from New York and has released on a record label called Wolf & Lamb. His stuff is really soulful and has a lot of depth to it. Julio Bashmore is another producer and DJ I'm into, he's from Bristol and I recently caught him playing at Fabric. James Blake is another, who just has an incredible amount of soul in his productions, I was always a fan of his beats; when I heard 'Limit To Your Love' I had no idea he could sing and since then I've been hooked. Boddika/Instra:Mental is one of my favourite producers, signed to a label called Swamp 8. There is a tune by him called 'When I Dip' and ever since I heard it, it has been one of my favourite tunes to play in the club, it's so much fun to mix.

What are we likely to hear in a Moxie mix? A bit of everything really, I like to mix it up and play across a few different genres. You could hear anything from House to Grime. My mix for i-D is a blend of old and new tunes that I really like at the moment, the playlist includes tunes from Prince right up to Gucci Mane.

His origins in drum and bass anchor RacknRuin (aka Matt Scott) to sub-fluttering productions, but to say that he’s strictly a drum and bass producer would be a mistake. Bouncing from house to breaks to dubstep, RacknRuin’s range is part of what sets the project apart.

On “Synthetic Heart” EP, RacknRuin’s most recent release, his influences emerge in the form of low, sub-bass basslines that mingle with classic electronic keys or reminiscing drum breaks. Blending the modern with the nostalgic in the most innovative of formations, RacknRuin is on a tear. Keep reading to learn more.

Can you tell us a little about your background? Where did you grow up, and where are you based now?

I was brought up in North London and also lived in New York for a couple of years. I am now based in North London; London is definitely my home.

How did you get started making music?

I was always into music when I was young, and I bought some cheap decks when I was 14. This got me addicted to vinyl and then onto producing at 16.

How would you describe the music that you make?

I try to make all different types of styles, but I guess it’s bass music with a jungle/electro flavor.

When you perform, what’s your preferred DJ setup?

I play with Serato, preferably with CDJs—the new Pioneer CDJ 2000s are amazing, as are the new Pioneer DJM Mixers.

Did you have any mentors when you were starting out? Who helped you get established?

A couple of friends from school really helped me get into production. My mate Alfy who is part of house duo Solarity showed me the basics of Logic. At the time I was using Fruity Loops, then through learning from him I got the confidence to start on Logic. Also my mates from ATG (a London music/graffiti crew) have helped me along the way, as well as my manager and booking agents.

When did you first feel that you had finally discovered your own
sound?

I think when I stopped concentrating on making just one type of music, which at the time was drum & bass. I was a DnB and jungle DJ and wanted to recreate what I loved playing out. But when I decided to try new sounds and beat patterns, etc., I really began to develop my own sound.

How do you explain your music to your family members?

My dad was a music journalist so he’s pretty good at critiquing music! They know what I do as they heard it booming from my bedroom from the age of 14! They just call it drum and bass or disco music; my brother used to call it “pots and pans” music!

Are you the type of musician who knows what kind of track you want to write before you sit down to make it, or do you create music more from a process of experimentation, trial and error?

It all depends. If I’m working on a certain project (i.e. a vocal track) I will have an idea of what I want the final product to be. If I’m doing something more experimental, or just playing with ideas, it will be more trial and error.

When you sit down to make a track, what’s the first thing you typically do? How long does a track typically take you to make?

Again, it depends now; as I’m very busy with various projects and remix work, I always have a goal. So I will work on the track I have to get done that day! Normally a track will take between three and four days to complete.

Where do you record?

At the moment I have a home studio with a great setup and a lovely view from the top of the house, so I’m really happy.

Do you currently have a favorite piece of gear or software?

Softsynth-wise, I really like Circle, FM8 and Massive. I also love my Dynaudio monitors.

Are you a morning person or night owl?

Morning for production, definitely. Night time is for playing out or sleeping.

Which record do you wish you had made?

If a cybernetic organism sent from the future was headed for your
home hell-bent on your termination, which *one* record would you
take with you before you headed to your heavily armed military
bunker?

Any Bob Marley Record.

When you’re not listening to electronic music, what do you listen to?

Everything. I like all types of music. At the moment, mainly reggae.

When you’re not making or playing music, what’s your preferred
pastime?

I love watching films with my girlfriend and playing football.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing with your life?

Probably living and working in Spain, as I speak Spanish and love the country, culture and people.

Tell us about your upcoming gigs and releases…

My latest 2 EPs, “Territory” and “Synthetic Heart” are out now. The “Soundclash Remix” EP will be out in mid-Februaury on Black Butter Records. And various remixes and releases are coming throughout this year. I am touring all over the UK at the moment and will be in the states in April and hopefully again later in the summer. I will be playing at most of the UK festivals as well.

What an amazing night! 15 Hours of straight vibes... With queues down the street for both parties over 2000 of you spent new years with ATG and the Urban Nerds crew over the night and day. Things turned absolutely nuts at the Do-One after party with people losing their minds as the day drew on I know I thought I was in a spaceship rather than in The Queen Of Hoxton for a few hours there. Thanks to everyone who attended/supported us sealing the last decade and starting a new one with such a bang. Also thanks to everyone who has supported our movement up to date, our achievements in 2011 are certainly not set and how we reach them is in our hands only but it's moments like these that remind us why we do what we do. To each one of you who reads this I wish you all the best for 2011 and hope you still get to do what you love and what makes you feel alive in this world even if you cant do it as your day job.

Son of the acclaimed jazz musician Steve Lodder, Alex Lodder, also known as Noisses, is now a creative musical force in his own right. In-house DJ for nights such as the over-hype ATG raves and dirty Urban Nerds parties, he can be found spinning bass-heavy riddims at most other sweaty little mash-ups all over London. He's also a super-talented producer, with his own grimy, crunked-out sound that somehow never quite loses its soul, no matter how heavy it gets. We catch up with him in the studio for a cup of green tea and a chat.

So, your dad's obviously been a massive influence on you, how was it growing up with that background?
Well, I grew up with jazz, mainly, cos my dad was a jazz pianist, so almost everything he played me was music of black origin, or influence. Standout ones were Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder and Prince on the pop side, then loads of jazz and funk. I remember, even as a teenager, him introducing me to things like LTJ Bukem and D'Angelo; things you'd expect your friends to introduce you to, but my dad was still discovering new music. So he played a big part in shaping my musical tastes..

That comes through in your production and your sets, you've got a real bass-driven sound, but it's still quite soulful. Did you play any instruments when you were younger?
I started playing drums at school. Then, when I was 15, I got an Atari off my dad that had Cubase on it, a cheap Yamaha Midi keyboard and a synth. I began copying things that I heard at the time, Propellerheads, Air and loads and loads of garage! That was when I first started DJing too.

You're really lucky you had access to that so young! Did you start playing out at clubs?
It was just mate's parties, being a big DJ wasn't part of my aim when I was a teenager, it was always about making music. I never really pushed it, then, late teens I went to uni and left London for a few years. I studied Music Production at West Midlands. It gave me the chance to make a lot of music, cos there wasn't much else to do! But I came back to London as much as I could.

Did you have a bigger goal with it?
Even to this day, I'm not 100% sure what I want to do, but I'll be happy as long as I'm involved in and making music, cos it's my first love and it will always be my last. I always wanted to make tunes as an artist, but I always wanted to work with other artists, people like the N.E.R.D.'s and Timbaland's out there too...

Have you got a wish list of collaborations?
In terms of the dance music, I'd love to get in the studio with Liam Howlett. He was a big influence for me, one of the best dance music pioneers ever! On the flipside, Prince...

That would be amazing!
He's just a legend and there's not many of them about these days!

What kind of kit do you favour in the studio?
I started on Cubase, but as soon as I could get a Mac I was on Logic, that was my first student loan gone! I still try and use as much outboard stuff as possible, cos you can always get good sounds and not everyone's got it.

What's your favourite piece of equipment?
The Virus is good, but probably my Mac, cos it does so much.

Do you find, because it's so cheap to get a computer now, there's a lot of similar music out there?
There's more people making music than there ever has been. I think all that's gonna happen is you're gonna find someone good in a pile of shit! More people making music is a good thing, because music's great! Everyone loves music, it makes the world go round!

What do you listen to at home?
I think you can find good music in all genres, guitar music, real leftfield electronic stuff, the new 2-steppy stuff that's coming out is pretty good, dubstep, obviously, hip hop, still, it feels like there's a resurgence in the UK hip hop, a lot of the old guys are stepping back up into the scene, there's something to look out for in that!

And what kind of nights do you like to go out to?
I don't really get the chance! But if I do, I love an old school D&B rave. For me, it's the best fast dance music to go out to! Apart from that, I like to go out and listen to soulful stuff too. Deviation's a great night for vibes, FWD and DMZ are wicked too.

Nice, let's talk about your new single, tell us about that...
It's out on Bullet Train, Marco Del Horno's label. He's just put Ho! Riddim out with P Money, which is smashing it! This is the third release as Noisses, which is always heavily influenced by dubstep and new big bass sounds. Most of the previous Noisses stuff was pretty heavy and nasty, so I kind of wanted to clean it up a bit and bring more musical elements. I just wanted to introduce a few more sounds in there, it's not all about dubstep!

Talk us through the tracks...
Okay, the title track is called Show Them, featuring Hollie Cook, it originally started off as a halfspeed dubstep tune, but I made it a bit more up-tempo and it has breaks in, it's just a bit fresher, you know? Innit is more of a club banger, it's big and bassy! I Hear It is a bit more experimental, there's some dubstep sounds, a bit of funky, a little bit of garage vibes in there, a real mixture. ThenApathy is the real down-tempo dubsteppy musical one; a bit more chilled, there's a bit more thought in it.

Nice, the VIP mix kills it for me! Do you find producing tracks in the studio gives you a better knowledge of working with them when you're DJing?
Yeah, I think you start to get an idea of structure and arrangement, you can tell when tunes are gonna drop and you get a natural feel for it, you don't even have to think about it, you just know when something's gonna change in a tune. It definitely helps DJing, you can structure your sets musically and get a bit more of intuitive in your mixes.

Have you got a wish list of places you'd like to play?
I'd love to do all the big parties and cities all round the world. I've played Fabric a few times, but I'd like to play there more... I'd like to play FWD and it'd be good to fill Koko one day!

Yeah, to have that kind of bass behind you must be sick! I noticed you've got some ink on your arm, is that the only tattoo you have?
I have another, which I got done when my granddad died, but this is a piece of music my dad wrote. I got it cos he's the main reason I do what I do, and I love what I do, so it's just a reminder. I asked him what tune he'd written that sums him up and it was this one...

So, going forward, is there a game plan?
Yeah, it's all coming together at the moment, the Noisses stuff is bubbling away, the EP's dropping soon. Then I'm working on a new project called Cellar Door, with Polar Bear and Hollie Cook again, which is a three way project; a leftfield, electronic, down-tempo kind of flex. We're doing a 14-track album, that we're gonna release either early or late next year, it's kind of a winter album, so we'll see how quick it comes about. If that gets a good reception, we'll tour it. Apart from that, I'm just gonna keep DJing and doing the Noisses stuff.

Do you find it quite hard to be original in what you're doing?
People are always looking for the next new sound and that's quite a tricky thing to get right. I've not put that kind of pressure on myself yet, I'm just making music that I'm feeling, it's all original, but I like to see the influences in something, I think you can see those in my work. A new sound should come naturally really, if you put enough effort and time into what you're doing in the studio, chipping away at that big block of concrete, then you'll come out with some crazy new statue.

What helps you focus?
Just remembering what I'm about, what I'm doing and why I'm doing it, because there can be so much bullshit wrapped up in the music industry, you can slip and forget why you're doing it.

So, what else have you got in the pipeline?
I want to do one more Noisses EP early next year and then a Noisses album. I'd like to work with a record label on it, in terms of promotion – it will need the backing of a good label...
